Snow, extreme cold leave a trail of damage to churches
Beyond cancellations caused by deep snow, the unusual cold of Arkansas’ winter storms damaged several parish and school buildings.
And the full-time in-person setting is what has brought in dozens of new students to Catholic schools across the state. When Bristol Public Schools announced they were going hybrid last year, St. Joseph School found parents wanted another option.
“Within 24 hours of that decision at the public level, we received 19 interested student calls. And they all ended up joining us, and we even got some more as the year started,” said St. Joseph School Principal Eric Frenette.
Leah Schatz has two children who started attending St. Joseph’s a few years ago and says she’s grateful for the in-person learning and the extra precautions.

The Haverhill City Council last night agreed to expand the city’s Housing Development Incentive Zone, a move that has the potential to bring more market rate housing into the downtown area.
The existing zone was developed back in 2013 under the state’s Housing Development Incentive Program, which provides tax incentives to developers who undertake new construction or substantial rehabilitation within that zone. The current zone encompasses most of the downtown area, including Merrimack, Washington and Winter Streets and Mayor James J. Fiorentini says the program has been a great success.
