From my Table By Chanie Nayman | May 4, 2021
A few days ago I was in my supermarket stocking up on school snacks. I made eye contact and smiled at the older woman in the checkout line behind me, thinking she was certainly going to tell me how adorable the kvetchy, hangry child sitting in my shopping cart was.
Instead, I got a distraught look in return, and then she asked in a strong accent, “Tell me, how many kids do you have? Because that looks like a
lot of snacks!”
“Don’t worry,” I responded. “They only take one a day, and it’s only for school.”
Livingston Community Enjoys Yom Ha’atzmaut By JLNJ Staff | April 22, 2021
Livingston celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut with a flag-raising over town hall on April 15. The event featured a daglanut performance by students from the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy. The annual Israel Independence Day event, organized by the Livingston Celebrates Israel Committee, is a project of the township’s diversity and inclusion committee. It is believed to be one of the few municipalities to offer a Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration.
Also at this year’s event, township officials announced a proclamation declaring April 15, 2021 as Rabbi Elie Mischel Day in Livingston, in honor of the religious leader at Suburban Torah synagogue who, along with his family, will be making aliyah this summer. The town noted Rabbi Mischel’s dedication to the greater Livingston community and Israel celebration. Also presenting the rabbi with an award at the event was the office Congresswoman

Coming Full Circle: A Sibling’s Story By Leah Commer | January 14, 2021
For as long as I can remember, I knew my brother wasn’t like other kids his age. There was something very special but different about him. Avi is only 20 months younger than me, but as I grew and matured, he lagged behind. Even so, we were always very close: goofy, sweet Avi and his protective older sister.
It was always hard to understand what Avi was trying to say, and he was diagnosed as learning disabled with a speech impediment very early on. I was pretty good at school, but Avi struggled to sit still, and to do even basic work. Thirty-five years ago, the concept of “special needs” wasn’t on people’s radar, unless they were specialists. Few programs existed, and kids who learned or acted differently were often ignored or even hidden.
