Several businesses and public institutions are still deciding whether to require masks after St. Joseph Countyâs order was canceled, but many didnât hesitate Friday to ditch the practice.
For at least the short term, people are likely to encounter a patchwork of mask rules. University Park Mall in Mishawaka and local hospitals, for example, will keep their mask requirements for now, while many restaurants and government buildings have already abandoned theirs.
In announcing his decision Thursday night to lift the mask order, the countyâs health officer, Dr. Robert Einterz, cited the CDCâs new recommendation that fully vaccinated people no longer need masks, in most cases.

Dr. Robert M. Einterz cited the CDCâs recommendation earlier in the day that fully vaccinated people no longer need masks in most cases.
Einterz also asked the St. Joseph County Council to rescind a related ordinance that allowed businesses to be fined for not enforcing the mask order among employees.
Both the mask order and the fine ordinance were supposed to be in place until May 27.
The decision to lift the order does not apply to businesses, which can still require masks.
