Sophie Walker had gold standard births, but many women want to talk about birth trauma in University of Western Sydney study

Such is the appetite for telling and hearing stories of birth that a research project open to submissions has already drawn more engagement in just three weeks than any previous study. The University of Western Sydney’s Australian Birth Experience Study (BESt) has attracted 4800 stories from women who have had babies in Australia within the past five years; sadly, nearly one-third of them report they felt traumatised by their birth experience. According to Professor Hannah Dahlen, one of the country’s most experienced midwifery researchers and teachers, nearly one-third of women say they have regrets about how their birth played out, one-third felt unhappy about the process and one in five felt pressured to have a medical intervention, “something they didn’t want”.

Australian actress Zoe Naylor explores why women s birth experiences are diminished

Save Share Birth, says filmmaker Zoe Naylor, is the next big feminist issue. “We’ve tackled #MeToo, we’ve begun talking about some very complicated, tricky ideas. But we still think that birth is just something to be endured, no matter what.” Naylor’s own experiences giving birth directly informed and influenced her film Birth Time: the Documentary; she has two children, and says after daughter Sophia’s hospital birth she was left feeling “alone, overwhelmed and unsupported” but son Beau’s arrival, at home (only 1 per cent of Australian births are homebirths), was vastly different thanks to the support of her husband and midwife.
