Council Approves $5.875M Loan Order for Capital Improvements

The City Council unanimously approved a loan order in the amount of $5.875 million for Fiscal Year 2021 Capital Improvements. Viscay said the funds would be used for “deferred maintenance” and equipment operations by city departments. He asked the Council to approve a bond that would accelerate the purchase of one additional fire pumper truck and one city-owned trash truck among other capital improvements. “Rates are historically low right now,” said Viscay. “We feel it is a good decision for the city to bump up a couple of these pieces of equipment and sell one bond for the entire amount to fully execute the 2021 Capital Improvement Plan and Budget.”

ZBA Approves Variance for Avis Lots on Charger Street

The Revere Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) granted a variance at its January 27 meeting to R&S Realty Trust, the owner of a single lot at 14 Charger Street, to reduce the minimum frontage requirement from 150 feet to 75 feet that will create two new lots. The variance allows the owner to have one lot comprising six acres and a second lot comprising 2.6 acres. Both lots will be used by Avis car rentals to house more than 2,000 cars for car storage only, with no on-site repairs or maintenance to be allowed. The hours of operation for the lots will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to transport cars to the Avis lot at Logan Airport. The storage of the cars in Revere will mean more than $750,000 in excise taxes for city coffers.

Revere city councilors oppose Wheelabrator Saugus ash landfill expansion

Revere city councilors oppose Wheelabrator Saugus ash landfill expansion Wicked Local Ten Revere city councilors endorsed a letter sent to the Wheelabrator Subcommittee in which they expressed opposition to any further expansion of the ash landfill operated by the Wheelabrator Saugus trash-to-energy plant. In the letter, the city councilors point out that a Wheelabrator representative alluded at a previous subcommittee meeting to wanting the ash landfill to go higher than the 50 feet that is currently permitted. Wheelabrator is currently operating under a valley fill permit with capacity to dispose of ash in the landfill into the fourth quarter of 2024. Revere residents often bear the brunt of noise and odors coming from the Wheelabrator plant, the city councilors contended.
