Summer Advantage program gives first-year students head start

Registration for the WSU Summer Advantage program is now open until early June.  Summer Advantage runs from June 28 to July 30 and helps first-year students transition into college, Joanne Greene, University Recreation programming director said. Move-in day for traditional students is on June 25 and June 16 for student-athletes. Typically, there are 75 students in the Summer Advantage program, which runs for five weeks, Greene said.  Both traditional and student-athletes will live in the same residence hall, Jonathan Stahl, UREC assistant director for adventure programs and experiential learning, said. Students will be housed in single rooms instead of having roommates.  Stahl said the program will be in person and will follow all COVID-19 public health guidelines.

UREC supports physical, mental, social well-being during COVID and beyond | WSU Insider

March 16, 2021 By Rachel Koon, Division of Student Affairs For many WSU Pullman community members, working out at a campus recreation center is an essential part of daily life. So when COVID-19 forced gyms and fitness facilities to temporarily close last March, the loss was felt acutely among students, faculty, and staff alike. Recognizing the importance of fitness to the campus community, University Recreation staff got to work on making campus recreation COVID safe. Staff began offering free online classes within a week of facilities closing so community members could exercise from their own homes. They familiarized themselves with state and campus COVID protocols. And they spent several weeks moving equipment, installing sanitizing and temperature check stations, installing signage on mask-wearing policies, and developing an online reservation system to accommodate new facility capacity limits.

By Steve Nakata, Division of Student Affairs When the Student Recreation Center opened its doors 20 years ago today, it quickly became one of the busiest places on the Pullman campus and one of the most admired recreation centers in the nation. University Recreation leaders Joanne Greene, director of programming, and Jeff Elbracht, director of facilities, were working as graduate assistants when the SRC was built and vividly remember the mad rush leading up to its scheduled opening on Jan. 19, 2001. “Joanne and I stopped by the building during the first week of January and plywood was still covering the entrance to the building–the front doors weren’t attached yet,” Elbracht said. “Also, the equipment began arriving before the flooring was complete, so there was a scramble to get that done.”
