FGA Research Finds Federal Pandemic-Related Unemployment Programs are Hurting Small Businesses

With wages at an all-time high, it is clear that unemployment benefits have discouraged Americans from returning to work. Labor shortages have also caused many employers to close or consider closing, and it is because of this that FGA urges states to end their participation in federally funded pandemic-related unemployment programs.
“Businesses across the country are struggling to fill a record-high 8.1 million open jobs. Congress’ decision to pay people more to stay home than to work is making filling those jobs virtually impossible,” said Jonathan Ingram, Vice President of Policy and Research at FGA.
The Foundation for Government Accountability Responds to Recent Bureau of Labor Statistics Report

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the number of job openings reached a record high of 8.1 million in March. This comes only days before the Foundation of Government Accountability polling found that 73 percent of small businesses reported having a difficult time hiring.
“Federal lawmakers are hurting small businesses looking to fill positions essential to their day-to-day operations. The $300 weekly unemployment bonus traps too many Americans in dependency by paying them more to stay home than return to work,” said Jonathan Ingram, FGA s VP of Policy & Research.
