City resident Doug Champ told school board members during a public hearing on the capital project they should begin laying the groundwork to move Jamestown High School from its East Second Street location elsewhere in the city, preferably the area that currently houses Jefferson Middle School. “I have no problem with what you’ve done,” Champ said.

Commission Supports JHS Mascot Name Change | News, Sports, Jobs

dphillips@post-journal.com The city’s Human Rights Commission has cast its vote on Jamestown High School’s mascot. The commission approved a resolution in April supporting a change to the Red Raider name. The group also approved that members of the commission should attend a Jamestown Board of Education meeting to discuss their decision with school officials. The commission’s discussion during their monthly online meeting on the JHS mascot started with a letter written to the group by Autumn Dahlgren, a member of Jamestown Justice Coalition Mascot Petition Task Force. Dahlgren wrote that a petition was started in June 2020 supporting the JHS mascot name change.

Mixed Feelings About Summer School Opportunities Expected | News, Sports, Jobs

We expect parents to have mixed feelings regarding summer school opportunities for their children. The Jamestown Public Schools District will offer its LEAP program, which mixes summer activities with literacy activities while Clymer and Panama school officials recently discussed their own enhanced summer programs. Schools have battled the “summer slide” for years, but those efforts are taking on a new form this year after COVID-19 has limited in-person instruction for many school districts for more than a year. The Panama, Clymer and Jamestown programs are open to any child who wants to participate. For Clymer and Panama, that is a departure from the mandatory summer school for struggling students. The smaller districts are planning new summer programs that aim to bolster a child’s education in a way that is also fun and more like a summer camp than classroom instruction. P-J photo by Eric Tichy Washington Middle School in Jamestown briefly went into a shelter-in-place Thursday morning due to a despondent student. Officers with the Jamestown Police Department and Alstar EMS responded to the 159 Buffalo St. school around 9 a.m. Several officers, along with the department’s comfort dog, could be seen on school grounds. Jamestown police said the student was secured and taken from the school for an evaluation. “No other students were in danger during this incident,” said Capt. Robert Samuelson.
