Today marks the first day of Black History Month 2021. The month-long celebration is a chance to acknowledge the historic achievements of Black Americans and to highlight their undeniable impact on American history. Game changers like Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. are some of the names we learn more about each February. But the celebration that is now Black History Month started long before these civil rights leaders made their mark.

Producer Mark Cortale has announced that seven award-winning stars of the stage and screen will join the January and February 2021 line-up of The Seth Concert Series, the live weekly series based on Seth Rudetsky s international Broadway series that began at The Art House in Provincetown ten years ago. Jessica Vosk, who starred most recently as Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, will make her series debut on January 24. Married stars Jeremy Jordan, Tony nominee as Jack in Newsies on Broadway and star as Winn CW s Supergirl, and wife Ashley Spencer, who has starred on Broadway as Sandy in Grease and Amber in Hairspray, perform together on January 31. James Monroe Iglehart and Taylor Iman Jones join Ray of Light for ‘Lizzie’ rebroadcast
For two decades, Ray of Light Theatre has rebelled against the notion that musical theater is a light, fluffy diversion, a mission made clear in its motto: “Blood. Sweat. Musicals.”
The “blood” bailiwick was especially well served by the company’s 2015 take on “Lizzie,” the Tim Maner, Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Alan Stevens Hewitt rock musical about Lizzie Borden, who was tried for a double ax murder in 1892. The show imagines one of American history’s most gruesome crimes with both humor (song titles include “40 Whacks” and “What the F ”) and poignancy: “In the house of Borden there’s a lock on every door; in every room, a prisoner of a long, silent war.”
The Broadway-themed soap opera will broadcast a live event on January 14.
