Chalmette renewable diesel project gets 2 key approvals Two local entities have approved a tax break to convert part of a refinery in Chalmette into a facility that can make renewable diesel fuel. The St. Bernard Parish Council and Sheriff James Pohlmann unanimously signed off on Chalmette Refining’s application for Louisiana’s Industrial Tax Exemption Program. The program requires local officials’ approval. If the ITEP is approved by the St. Bernard Parish School Board, and the potential investors select St. Bernard for the project, construction could begin this year, according to a news release from the St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation. Plans are for the facility to be fully operational by the end of 2022 or first quarter of 2023.

(AP) A former Louisiana sheriff’s deputy has been convicted of sex crimes against girls. Kevin Rickmon, 32, of Chalmette was found guilty Friday of sexual battery of a minor and attempted third degree rape, state Attorney General Jeff Landry said in a news release Monday. St. Bernard Parish Sheriff Sheriff James Pohlmann fired Rickmon after his arrest on those charges in June 2018. Pohlmann said in 2018 that one of the incidents had occurred in 2016 and the other in 2018. He said both victims were female minors. Rickmon was previously a New Orleans police officer.

During the past three weeks deputies have responded to three burglaries at two different schools. In each instance, April 21 and 27 and May 9, the burglaries happened after midnight and appear to involve the same suspects.
