“I have now deleted this tweet about the UK s results in the Eurovision Song Contest, and apologise for any offence caused,” Ms Spear said in a statement on May 23 as police were said to be investigating a number of complaints about her ‘hate UK’ tweet.
Posting on Twitter on Thursday, May 27, Ms Spear asked those sending her abuse via email, text and phone to “please stop”:
“My phone has been off since Saturday.
“I’m terrified I miss casework due to the volume of emails, texts, voicemails and phone calls I am receiving.
“Those amplifying this after I have apologised know what they’re doing.

Although my generation is far from past it, enough time has passed to reflect on both former glories and the decisions we now regret.
It was last Saturday night that I was reminded of perhaps my biggest regret, when I settled down on the sofa to watch the annual cheese-fest that is Eurovision.
It was Amanda Holden’s fault. During her brief cameo as spokesperson for the UK’s judging panel, the ubiquitous television personality attempted to say good evening in both French and Dutch, joking that she didn’t know which language was which.
It was an attempt at humour (we think) that didn’t go down well at all with many of those watching at home, who felt that her comments compounded our latest night of shame at the world’s biggest singing contest.
…and before that, Rome 1991
…by coincidence France were runners-up then too!

Rock bottom
At the bottom of the table we saw a spate of ‘nil points’ awarded by televoters with the dreaded zero being dished out to Jeangu Macrooy (The Netherlands), Blas Cantó (Spain), Jendrik (Germany) and James Newman (United Kingdom) who also received zero points from the juries.
All four artists took the absolutely brutal news in their stride, smiling and cheering; an advert for sportsmanship.
