AVERILL PARK, N.Y. — Michael Blostein, director of instrumental music at Averill Park High School, has been named a quarterfinalist of the 2022 Grammy Museum’s Music Educator Award. The award is presented by the Recording Academy and Grammy Museum, recognizing current educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education, and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. “We are very proud of Mr. Blostein and the work that he has done in the music department,” Averill Park CSD Superintendent Dr. James Franchini said. “During this challenging pandemic year, he has stepped up and created lasting memories for students who missed out on many of the traditional milestones. Capital Region voters approve school budgets, boards and propositions

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. — On Tuesday, May 18, school districts across the Capital Region held votes on budgets and school board elections. According to the New York State School Boards Association, New York voters approved 99.2% of school district budgets. We appreciate the many who turned out – in person or by absentee ballot – to approve local school budget proposals and elect school board members this year, NYSSBA Executive Director Robert Schneider stated. The high passage rate for proposed budgets is a welcome endorsement of spending plans that will strengthen our educational programs and restore some of the academic and student support services that were curtailed by the pandemic, Schneider continued.

(Paul Buckowski/Times Union)Paul Buckowski/Albany Times Union SAND LAKE – Averill Park High School students will continue remote learning for a third week while Algonquin Middle School students will return to in-person, hybrid instruction Monday as the district continues to deal with aspects of the coronavirus pandemic. The district previously moved all students to remote learning when quarantining requirements for COVID-19 made it impossible to provide bus service for students. Superintendent James Franchini in a letter to district residents Thursday had said that district “staffing levels are returning to a more sustainable level” leading to changes in instruction.
