The Rev. Dean H. Lewis died on June 14, 2021, in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 94. Born September 6, 1926, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Samuel T. Lewis and Pharis Haynes, he grew up in Harrisonville, Missouri. He entered the Naval Air Force in 1944 upon graduation as Valedictorian from high school and was discharged as an Aviation Radar Technician 2nd Class. He graduated from William Jewell College as President of the Centennial Senior Class of 1949, having been selected as one of five members of the Aeons Honor Society, and won national recognition in debate and extemporaneous discussion. After graduation from Yale Divinity School in 1953, where he was awarded the Mersick Prize in Preaching, he was ordained to the Ministry of the Presbyterian Church USA and installed as Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Springdale, Arkansas. WILMINGTON Devon Jamie Horniman (McDermatt), 37, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, June 27, 2021, in Tabor City.
Devon was born March 23, 1984, in North Hempstead, New York, to James Joseph and Darian Stephanie McDermatt.
The first thing everyone noticed when they met Devon was her beautiful smile. She developed her passion for horses and riding at a very early age and was happiest when she was teaching her students or riding her beloved horse, Lizzie. In addition to her love of horses, she loved saving and treating small animals and had recently started working with them at Needham Veterinary Hospital in Wilmington.
Although she had a passion for animals, her true heart and soul was her husband, Nathan, and their two young children, Grayson James and Charlotte Rose. When she was with her children, her face was glowing with pride and love for them.
