Community Heroes is a CBC Ottawa series highlighting people making a difference in small or big ways in their communities during COVID-19.
Kortney Force s own world has been turned upside down this past year. Just like many others, we ve been dealing with a lot of grief and loss, said Force, who lost her job when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
After months of struggling to make ends meet, Force, who lives in Ottawa s Woodpark neighbourhood, across Woodroffe Avenue from Carlingwood Shopping Centre, came up with an idea for a special project.
KINGSTON, ONT. An independent Kingston movie theatre owner says the theatre will be popping popcorn and welcoming back guests as soon as they’re allowed, after the community helped raise $100,000 to keep the cinema’s doors open during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like other independent theatres in the province, The Screening Room has had a difficult year under COVID-19. Owner Wendy Huot told CTV News it has been one of mixed emotions and questions. “When would we be able to reopen? Would we be able to reopen? Will there be a future for the movie theatre business? This year has been wild both emotionally and financially,” she said.
LLANDRINDOD Wells Town Council’s search for a new councillor continues as they seek to fill a void in the town’s east ward. The search has become somewhat of a saga over the last year – not helped by the coronavirus pandemic, as town life across Mid Wales has become less active and monthly meetings have moved online. A position on the council became available last June after Allan Curtis’ resignation, which was subsequently filled by Jill Shaw. Since then, Lindsay Ward has stepped down with the council experiencing difficulty finding a replacement due to Covid-19 restrictions. The vacancy is being readvertised via co-option as the electors have not called for an election within the required time and therefore the town council is permitted to co-opt.
