You Can Now Play The Canceled Dreamcast Castlevania Demo
Castlevania Resurrection was canned back in 2000, but you can now play its Dreamcast pre-E3 demo if you re so inclined.
A canceled 3D Castlevania game for the Sega Dreamcast is now widely playable for the first time, albeit in prototype form. Earlier in April, footage of a demo of the canned game appeared on YouTube, which caused Castlevania fans to lobby its anonymous owner to release the demo for the world to experience.
Now, thanks to that collector and the French Dreamcast fansite Sega Dreamcast Info, you can now download the prototype and play it for yourself. According to the site, it includes several levels as well as a battle against the boss Medusa. Since it s an unfinished prototype for a canceled game, you can definitely expect some frame rate drops and other technical issues. Earlier this month, it appeared as if
Castlevania Resurrection, a cancelled Sega Dreamcast project from the early 2000s, had somehow escaped the dark confines of a Konami warehouse somewhere. Now, everyone has a chance to play that prototype thanks to gaming preservationists having archived that early build.
This has all been made possible by the folks over at
Sega Dreamcast Info, a French website dedicated to chronicling the history of the much beloved video game console. The site first brought the
Castlevania Resurrection prototype to light weeks ago, and has now made the ROM and associated files available via Archive.org.

What just happened? A playable prototype of a canceled Castlevania game for the Sega Dreamcast has seemingly surfaced and is thought to be the first time that such footage has been shown publicly. It’s unclear what the person behind the YouTube video plans to do next, if anything at all. The prevailing hope is that the contents of the disc will be shared online for preservation purposes, but for now, all we have is this footage to work with.
Konami in the late 90s started working on Castlevania: Resurrection, a 3D action platformer featuring Sonia Belmont and Victor Belmont. Oh, and it involved time travel, allowing the story to be set in 1666 before the events of the original Castlevania.
