(Enterprise photo — Aaron Cerbone) TUPPER LAKE The village board has passed a budget over the tax cap for the first time ever. Village Mayor Paul Maroun has predicted this would happen for years, saying the tax levy cap is unsustainable and “unrealistic.” Prices of things the village buys rise each year at a higher rate than the tax cap, he said. The $3.24 million budget will spend 2.9% more than last year’s, an increase of $91,544. This spending increase results in a 3.5% increase in the tax levy the money collected from village property taxpayers. This year the village’s tax levy increase is capped by the state at 1.01%, or a $22,000 increase. The budget’s levy is over the cap by $35,945.71.
