IONIA, MI A former Lowell police officer has been ordered to stand trial on two felonies after a judge found he “unloaded his gun, basically” at a fleeing car.
Two people in the car which had just backed toward then-Officer Jason Diaz and nearly struck him were injured by bullets. One, a teen, had a graze wound to the head.
Driver strikes Michigan welcome sign in single-vehicle crash
A driver struck the Michigan welcome sign Wednesday in a single-vehicle crash in Port Huron Township.
At about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, a driver was traveling westbound on I-94 when he went off the road near the welcome center and struck the stone wall of the Welcome to Pure Michigan sign, Port Huron Township Fire Capt. Jason Diaz said.
Diaz said the crash appears to have been caused by a medical issue the driver, a man in his 30s, was experiencing. He was the only person in the vehicle.
Diaz said he was unsure of the man s injuries.

IONIA, MI A former Lowell police officer who authorities say “needlessly fired” eight rounds at a fleeing vehicle, striking a man and teen in the car, is expected in court Wednesday, April 14.
The police officer, according to testimony, fired 11 shots total during the incident, and it is the final eight shots that led to criminal charges being filed.
2 dogs missing after Port Huron Twp. fire
A Port Huron Township home was a total loss after a fire Sunday evening.
The Port Huron Township Fire Department responded to a report of a mobile home on fire in the 4100 block of Dove Road shortly before 6:30 p.m., Capt. Jason Diaz said.
When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were showing throughout the home.
All occupants of the home evacuated before firefighters arrived, Diaz said.
Port Huron Township Fire Chief Dan Mainguy said two pet dogs were unaccounted for after the fire.
There were no injuries.
It appears to be an accidental fire caused by a discarded smoking materials on the outside of the house, Mainguy said.
