Brothers sentenced for running $15K a month marijuana ring | News, Sports, Jobs

BUCKHANNON Two brothers who authorities say were bringing in $10,000 to $15,000 a month from a THC and marijuana enterprise were sentenced Thursday in Upshur County Circuit Court. Robert Thomas Quici, 21, and Joseph David Quici, 20, each previously pled guilty to one count of possession of controlled substance with intent to deliver marijuana, a felony, and one count of possession of controlled substance, marijuana, a misdemeanor. Both Quicis were represented by attorney James Hawkins. In Robert’s hearing, Hawkins asked for a continuation of home confinement or probation, but said that home confinement is compelling because it offers more restriction and support.

BUCKHANNON The former director of Upshur County Special Olympics will spend a year on home confinement and must write a letter of apology to the organization. Charliena Jane Helmick Gilmore, 45, of Buckhannon, previously pled guilty to one count of embezzlement on Nov. 12, 2020, admitting to embezzling just over $16,000 from December 2015 to February 2019. Restitution has already been paid back to the organization, a fact that Gilmore’s attorney pointed out as he first asked the court to consider deferred adjudication. Under deferred adjudication as defined in West Virginia Code 61-11-22a, the court could have deferred acceptance of Gilmore’s guilty plea for up to three years.

Suder appointed to fill Upshur magistrate slot | News, Sports, Jobs

BUCKHANNON The second open magistrate position has been filled by an Upshur County native. Alan Suder was appointed Tuesday by 26th Judicial Circuit Judges Jake Reger and Kurt Hall, according to a joint press release. Suder will fill the term of Kay Hurst, who resigned Jan. 20, just three weeks into serving her second term. The release from the judges cites Suder being a private business owner for 30 years and his three terms serving on the Upshur County Board of Education. “I’m very appreciative,” Suder said of the appointment. “I am looking forward to serving the citizens of Upshur County. It is very humbling.”

For The Inter-Mountain BUCKHANNON The same day that a new Upshur County magistrate was appointed, Upshur County’s Division 2 magistrate submitted her resignation. Kay Hurst, who was re-elected to a second term in the June primary and served nearly three weeks of that term, submitted her resignation to Judge Jake Reger effective at 4 p.m. Wednesday. When The Inter-Mountain had checked with Reger at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, the circuit judge had not received a resignation letter and could not confirm the resignation. “I don’t have any other comment about it,” Reger said Thursday morning. “If you want to talk to Mrs. Hurst, you can. She resigned and we are going to have to replace her.”
