A plan to restructure the University of Missouri s social justice centers this summer has been pushed back indefinitely.
MU spokesman Christian Basi said Friday that the plan had been postponed to give Maurice Gipson, vice chair of diversity, inclusion and equity, more time to communicate with those affected by the changes.
MU operates five social justice centers: the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center, LGBTQ Resource Center, Multicultural Center (MCC), Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) Center and the Women s Center. Students held two large protests when word spread through campus about the restructuring.

Maurice Gipson, MU vice chancellor for inclusion, diversity and equity, announced that he was pausing plans to restructure MU s social justice centers, plans which caused outrage among students and faculty members.
Gipson said the plans to reimagine the centers and positions are paused, meaning they are no longer looking to begin implementation July 1. Gipson said the pause will allow him to learn and get more feedback from stakeholders.
On April 28, MU spokesperson Christian Basi said plans to restructure the five social justice centers, which provide resources and mentoring to underrepresented students, were planned to be implemented July 1. However, initial steps, such as posting new positions, were on hold until Gipson met with Faculty Council on May 6, the Missourian previously reported.

Some MU students could face disciplinary action after a campus protest Thursday
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Dozens of students protested the restructuring of the university s social justice centers Thursday.
MU spokesperson Christian Basi confirmed that demonstrators walked through Jesse Hall and a student union after being told that disruptions were not allowed there.
He says that any disciplinary action for students will be decided by the office of student accountability.
Basi said, It s part of the investigation from the office of student accountability. They ll be looking at that- they ll be looking at what the actions of the students were within the buildings. They were loud enough for us to feel like it was appropriate that it was a disruption and to forward it to the office of student accountability. Now, it s under review, and they ll make a decision based on that information and that evidence that they have.
