Jervois Quay: Today’s the day we, the council, and just about every road sign around the region, have been warning you about. Jervois Quay has closed to fix a broken stormwater pipe. The work began at 7pm last night, and the six-lane road will stay shut until 6am on Tuesday. Council is urging people to rethink their travel plans, especially for Friday’s commute. Suggestions include travelling during off-peak hours, or taking the train. Contractors will be working round the clock to complete the work, which would normally take around six weeks, in five days.

Traffic was at a standstill on several motorway exits on Friday morning, including the one onto Murphy Street, due to the closure of Jervois Quay
Congestion at entrance points to Wellington central is building as commuter traffic is diverted from the closure of Jervois Quay this morning. Southbound traffic on State Highway 1 was backed up beyond the Hobson St bridge as of 8.35am. There reports that by 9am, traffic was backed up to the bottom of Ngauranga Gorge on State Highway 1. The Aotea Quay off-ramp remained open but Murphy and Hawkestone St off ramps were heavily congested by the larger volumes of traffic using the alternative route to Thorndon and Pipitea.
