Letter: GOP cabal only wants their big political donors influencing the legislative process

Sen. Jerry Stevenson just passed a bill in the Utah Legislature to further cripple citizens’ ability to participate in government through the initiative process. What he is telling you is that our GOP cabal does not want anyone other than their big political donors influencing the legislative process. His reasoning was that out-of-state interests are participating in that process and that “moneyed organizations from outside Utah shouldn’t be able to set the state’s policy.” I would assume that, any day now, he will condemn former Rep. Rob Bishop, who received 93% of his campaign money from outside the state. But maybe that’s OK, because Bishop was a dyed-in-the-wool Republican. Utah will always see this kind of poor legislation as long as we are a one party state.
