THE storming of the Capitol Hill Building in Washington, DC, last week by supporters of President Trump trying to stop the US Congress approving Joe Biden as the next president was a real eye-opener on the stark inequality of treatment by law enforcement to African Americans.
This was the view of a Trinidadian who lives and works in the US when contacted by Newsday on the weekend for his view on the riots. TT-born engineer Jerry Fletcher, who lives in Baltimore, an hour away from Washington, DC, said that in the wake of the storming of Capital Hill, Trinis in the area started to get in touch with each other to ensure they were ok.

PEORIA, Ariz. Robert L. Fletcher, founder and owner of Cobre Tire Co., died Dec. 6 at age 100.
A native of Phoenix, decorated World War II veteran and serial entrepreneur, Mr. Fletcher in 1970 founded Cobre Tire, a commercial tire dealership and retreading concern focused on the mining and construction industries.
Mr. Fletcher sold the business s commercial assets, which had grown to 33 outlets and several retreading plants, in 1997 to Bridgestone Firestone Inc.
Along the way, he set up Fletcher Racing Team, in part to help promote Cobre Tire. The racing team was active in Indy Car racing from 1973-1982, running cars at the Indianapolis 500 and other venues for racers such as Bobby Unser, Pancho Carter, Art Pollard and Lee Kunzman, among others.
Gloria Burnet Fletcher, 88, passed away on Dec. 27, 2020, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. Born on June 10, 1932, in Tupper Lake, she was the youngest daughter of the late Liva (Payment) and Fred Burnet. Gloria married Douglas Fletcher on Sept. 11, 1950. They enjoyed 65 years together before his passing in 2015. Together they enjoyed horseback riding, traveling on vacations and watching their grandchildren play at various sporting events and attending their concerts. Gloria was an active 4-H Leader, teaching girls in Lake Clear and Tupper Lake skills of sewing and knitting. She enjoyed cross-country skiing with family and friends. Later they moved to Potsdam, where family remained very important to her as she hosted countless family holidays and get-togethers. She was often the last one to leave the table, as she was too busy talking about her grandchildren’s latest accomplishments including how she saw her great-grandchildren singing songs on the iPad.
