BWF announces calendar for 1st half of 2021, India Open to be held from May 11 New Delhi : The India Open Super 500 will be held from May 11 to 16 and will serve as the last qualification event for the Tokyo Olympics, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed in its new calendar for the upcoming year. The Olympic Qualifying period for Tokyo will restart next year and the first qualifying tournament will be the Swiss Open from March 2 to 7 followed by German Open from March 9-14. The USD 400,000 India Open will be the last of the 17 events to earn points towards sealing berths for the Tokyo Olympics.

Badminton: Back-to-back Malaysian tourneys to be held in April

Datuk Kenny Goh PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Open and Malaysian Masters are set to be staged back-to-back next April as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) unveiled their revised tournament calendar which adopts a cluster system where possible. The Malaysian Open will take place from March 31-April 4, followed by the Malaysian Masters from April 6-11. The “Malaysia bubble” is one of three clusters confirmed together with the ones in Indonesia and Denmark. The “Indonesia bubble” will be the Indonesian Masters (June 1-6) and Indonesian Open (June 8-13) while the Denmark Open (Oct 12-17) and Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals form the ‘Denmark bubble’.

It includes new dates for the postponed Thomas and Uber Cup tournaments. The world governing body will also provide COVID-19 support packages for tournament hosts, it has announced, which will provide financial assistance. These cost-relieving initiatives are planned to ensure tournaments can continue to be part of the 2021 BWF World Tour. They will help cover the costs of implementing COVID-19 preventative measures at the events.
