Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order allowing for virtual school during the coronavirus pandemic will not be renewed after this academic year, officially ending the option for online learning, the governor said Monday.
“Neatly stated, through this action, we are declaring that all students will be back in school for full-time, in-person instruction come the start of the 2021-2022 school year,” Murphy said during a COVID-19 media briefing in Trenton.
Salary and pension? Bill lets retired teachers return to work
TRENTON – A bill moving through the Senate would let retired teachers return to the classroom for up to two years and collect a salary and pension at the same time, in an effort to make it easier to hire for hard-to fill vacancies.
That’s currently the law for short-term hires for school superintendents and other administrators. The proposal would expand that to teaching positions deemed by the state to be “of critical need,” which is likely to cover things like science, math, world languages and special education.
“This is an issue that’s been facing a lot of our school districts,” said Sen. Teresa Ruiz, D-Essex. “I think a lot of personnel has retired. There’s a lot of vacancies in specific areas, and so we’re just trying to create tools so that districts are able to staff up.”

At the top of the salary bracket, New Jersey’s highest-paid teachers, often those with advanced degrees and years of teaching experience, average a salary of about $88,000 across all 21 counties that’s according to state data analyzed by NJ Advance Media.
“We want the most talented, most capable people in New Jersey’s classrooms teaching our students. One of the ways that you attract those people to the profession and one of the ways you keep those people in the profession is by paying professional wages,” Steve Baker, spokesman for the New Jersey Education Association, told NJ Advance Media.
