ISLANDERS are being urged to respect wildlife at Jersey’s reefs during what is expected to be a busy boating season this year.

Following a boost in sales of vessels throughout the pandemic, Jersey’s waters could see a rise in boating activity this summer – particularly as international travel options are likely to remain limited.
Kevin McIlwee, chairman of Jersey Marine Conservation, is reminding Islanders that marine wildlife can be seriously affected by continuous disturbances. He is asking boat owners to remain cautious and be respectful of the natural environment when visiting popular reefs such as the Ecréhous.

Under the auspices of the Butterfield Marine Watch, the aim of the programme is to educate young people about the precious local marine environment. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, organisers have taken into account social-distancing requirements and adapted plans to ensure young people do not miss out on the learning experience.
