Commissioners say no to public statement in travel voucher investigation
Vice Chairman of the Otero County Commission Couy Griffin said there were parties, other than himself, responsible for Otero County s alleged violation of its own travel policy and the State s policy on travel reimbursements last year.
Griffin asked his fellow Commissioners on May 13 to approve a public statement which he hoped would explain how the violation - a $3,237.48 reimbursement to Griffin in September 2019 to attend a conference in Washington, D.C. - occurred.
County Commission Chairman Gerald Matherly and Otero County Commissioner Vickie Marquardt declined to discuss or approve such a statement.
The resolution to reopen Otero County to pre-pandemic levels failed to pass at the Otero County Commission meeting April 8 in a 2 to 1 vote.
The resolution was proposed by District 2 Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin, who was the sole vote in favor of passage. Commissioners Gerald Matherly and Vickie Marquardt voted against the measure..
Marquardt, District 3 commissioner, opened the discussion with a review of her conversation with New Mexico (Association of) Counties Executive Director Steve Kopelman. (Kopelman s) recommendation is that we table (the resolution) until some changes can be made because he felt some of the stuff that was in it was illegal and he definitely didn t like the part in there about the sheriff s office being asked to be involved in this, Marquardt said.

In a 2-1 vote, the Otero County Commission shot down a resolution calling for a 100% county reopening Thursday. Commissioner Couy Griffin, who proposed the resolution, was the only one to vote in favor of a full reopening.
“I m doing it, trying to bring representation and trying to hold the line, trying to keep people from feeling like they have to wear a mask or they re going to lose their job,” Griffin said. “That s not fair. That s why people have elected officials like us, to stand in that gap.”
