Supporters of a nearly 30-year-old, eight-phase project that would establish an estimated $6 million interpretive center adjacent to the Langwood Education Center east of Grandview met Tuesday with county officials and other interested individuals to discuss the project’s next step.
Al Bohling, president of the Tri-Rivers Conservation Foundation, which has been assisting the Louisa County Conservation Board since about 1991 on the proposed Louisa Interpretive Center, told about 30 people the meeting was intended to provide LCCB members, supervisors and others an update on the effort.
Bohling, TRCF Director Jay Schweitzer and LCCB Executive Director Katie Hammond alternated narratives on the project, using a series of slides showing the progress made on the LIC development.

WAPELLO Although the remaining Fiscal Year 2022 budget proposals for Louisa County departments and other spending categories were reviewed Friday by the county board of supervisors, it was a later discussion on dealing with next year’s proposed salary increases that ended up dominating the meeting.
The salary discussion has been the elephant in the room for the supervisors since the budget reviews began last week.
Traditionally the supervisors have provided a general percentage amount to the various departments, and the department heads then have incorporated that salary increase into their individual spending plans.
Often the percentage figure supplied by the supervisors has been based on the percentage increase recommended for the county’s elected officials by the county compensation board.

COLUMBUS JUNCTION A proposal to expand the amount of funding Columbus Junction currently provides to help finance the Louisa Development Group’s executive director position was presented Wednesday to the city council.
Mayor Mark Huston said he and council member Frank Best recently attended a meeting where the proposal was unveiled to them, Wapello city officials and other local leaders.
While the position already is funded through a partnership between the LDG; Louisa County; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Louisa County; and the nine incorporated cities of Louisa County, Best said the new proposal called for Wapello and Columbus Junction to increase their financial support.
