Mountain Scene By PHILIP CHANDLER Kids up to 12 couldn’t ask for more fun than they’ll get at this Sunday’s free Teddy Bear’s Picnic at the Queenstown Events Centre. Between 11am and 2pm there’ll be oodles of outdoor games, music, book readings, face painting and, of course, food, including free sausages. But don’t to forget to bring your teddy bear MC Fiona Stephenson, pictured above, will be awarding prizes for the likes of ‘best-dressed’ and ‘most-loved’. Performers will include Wakatipu Conservatoire of Classical Ballet and Turn Up The Music Trust students. Hare & Ruru and Bongo The Stowaway Mouse, respectively.

In the book, Bongo, having stowed on a plane that lands in NZ, undergoes various adventures and befriends Maia, a kiwi, and Molly, a wise old owl Molly also happens to be the name of Healy’s three-year-old daughter. Maia and Molly even demonstrate a haka to him, but the latter tells Bongo mice don’t fit in with NZ’s ecosystem, so he’ll have to go. Healy says she started the book about five years ago but completed it during lockdown last year.

Speakeasy evolves into the new ways of communicating

The long months of lockdown have failed to dampen the enthusiasm of Speakeasy Toastmasters. Last week s meeting was an exhilarating exhibition of eloquence as six speakers presented a diverse selection of ideas and opinions, some reflective, some provocative and some shape shifting. A large Zoom audience of members and welcome guests (including one from Brisbane, Australia!) were entertained and challenged. Bridie O Connell started proceedings with her reflective Pathways of Life . Bridie, a native of Millstreet, spoke of her experiences in the Civil Service in Dublin. Her career encompassed diligent service in various Government Departments including Revenue, Transport and the Office of An Taoiseach. As she asserted - the wheels of power have cogs too .
