Talk looks at local effects of first global pandemic
The way that Warkworth and the surrounding areas were affected during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 is the subject of a talk at Warkworth Museum next month.
Sandspit resident Dr Jenny Collins says her “Living in Extraordinary Times: The experience of a 1918 flu pandemic in Warkworth and Rodney” will focus on how the region dealt with the disease that killed close to 9000 New Zealanders.
She says that while the flu was very different to Covid-19, there are some parallels with the current pandemic – schools were closed and people quickly realised the importance of isolation and hygiene.
Despite a year of providing entertainment both in-person and online through the pandemic, the drag-focused nightclub Oasis still needs fan support to remain open. So owner D Arcy Drollinger will host a 12-hour telethon with dozens of performers on March 6.
Scheduled for noon to midnight, the telethon will include live and pre-recorded performances, testimonials, hourly interactive events, fabulous items up for auction from our community. As we approach the one-year anniversary of Oasis shutting down our normal operations due to Covid-19, the financial situation has become dire. True Love is alive and well in South Lake Tahoe. This Saturday, February 27, 2021, Tom and Cheryl Millham will be celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary. It was exactly 50 years ago, also on a Saturday, that the couple was wed in Temple City, California. The minister who performed the ceremony was Cheryl’s brother, Dr. Robert Bender.
Both Tom and Cheryl spent their childhood in Temple City, going through the city’s school system and both graduated from Temple City High School. The only difference was that Cheryl graduated in 1958 and Tom in 1968. But, going through the school system was not the only similarity in their lives.
