A luxury home has long been a status symbol, meant to showcase wealth by utilizing in-demand architects and rare imported materials. It was certainly the case for the wealthiest families in Gilded Age America, prior to the turn of the 20th century, when building a mansion to use as a summer cottage in the resort town Newport, Rhode Island, was a popular move. “They built them to make a statement – there’s no way around that,” says Trudy Coxe, CEO and executive director of the Preservation Society of Newport County, which preserves and operates 11 historic properties and landscapes in Newport. “They wanted others to know that they could afford to build them.”

Sometimes It s Best to Tap Out of a Bidding War, Even if You Can Go Higher

Mansion Global Amid intense competition, buyers must decide what a home is worth and stick to it By Alanna Schubach  |  Save For sale sign Mario Gutiérrez. / Getty Images Demand for real estate has surged over the last year in many regions of the U.S., particularly in the suburbs of large cities. Low mortgage interest rates and the pressures of the ongoing pandemic have compelled many urban buyers to rethink their lifestyles, and seek larger homes with outdoor space. On top of this, low inventory in these in-demand regions is fueling fierce competition and bidding wars among buyers. This is especially the case in the New York City suburbs: In Westchester, for instance, the time from listing to closing was only two months for single-family homes this winter, while in Greenwich, Connecticut, there were 108 signed deals in February, compared to 42 in February 2020.

Stars in the arts 2021: Arts Council Napa Valley recognizes January s student artists

Register Staff Despite the challenges of the pandemic shut-downs, Napa Valley students have continued to create art. Arts Council Napa Valley (ACNV) began 2021 by recognizing 11 students from Calistoga to American Canyon for excellence in the arts. Each student was singled out by their teacher for “going beyond,” “always showing up,” and most importantly, “inspiring others.” ACNV judges agreed two studio art students at the high school and middle/elementary levels were deserving of honor, resulting in two ties in that category. Other students were recognized for excellence in choir, theater, digital media, instrumental music and dance. Here are February’s Student of the Month winners:
