Adirondack Daily Enterprise A woman from Saranac Lake received a letter from the state Department of Labor telling her she had unemployment insurance money to collect and then another and another. All of them looked very official. The woman, whom the Enterprise is not naming to protect her from retribution, said the phone numbers, postage and Key Bank debit card she got all seemed legitimate. But the letters inside telling her she had unemployment insurance to collect did not make any sense. She’s retired. “I thought, ‘Maybe New York state is really losing it, ” she said. The letters were persistent, and some required more personal information, like her full Social Security number. She was “panicked” and worried how fraudsters got her information.

Person killed in Bellmont snowmobile crash

BELLMONT — State police confirmed Friday morning that a snowmobile crash in Bellmont resulted in one fatality. State police are currently investigating the fatal snowmobile collision on Wolf Pond Road, according to Trooper Jennifer Fleishman, public information officer for state police Troop B. According to Fleishman, the state police are in the initial stages of their investigation. “We are only confirming at this point that we are investigating a snowmobile collision which crash that resulted in one fatality on Wolf Pond Road,” Fleishman said. In addition to state police, law enforcement units from the state Department of Environmental Conservation Police and State Park Police also responded to the scene.

Ogdensburg mayor charged with harassment for allegedly pushing now-retired fire captain

OGDENSBURG — Mayor Jeffrey M. Skelly has formally been charged with harassment in connection with an incident where he allegedly pushed a former city fire captain to the ground outside City Hall last year. Mayor Skelly, 61, was charged by state police Wednesday with second-degree harassment, state police Troop B Public Information Officer Jennifer Fleishman confirmed Thursday. He was issued a summons returnable to Fowler Town Court on March 16. Mayor Skelly said Thursday that he plans to fight the charge. “It’s not true and I’m going to fight it,” Mayor Skelly said. According to a complaint filed Dec. 29 of last year in City Court, Mayor Skelly is alleged to have physically harassed a person outside City Hall on Dec. 9, 2020. It was later confirmed the person allegedly pushed by the mayor was now-retired Fire Capt. Gerald H. Mack. The incident was also reportedly caught on camera.
