When George Lucas envisioned a prequel series for Star Wars, he saw an operatic melodrama full of religious absolutism, financial corruption, royal intrigue, and something called midichlorians. Episodes I, II, and III of his Star Wars prequels–while not at all wholly unforgivable–are still baffling to behold, more than two decades later. But Lucas’s vision wasn’t the whole picture for a modern take on Star Wars. Buried somewhere in the sandy dunes of ancillary prequel-era stuff is a swashbuckling action series by Genndy Tartakovsky, the animation mastermind behind Samurai Jack. It’s called Clone Wars, and it’s finally available to stream in its entirety as part of a “Vintage Star Wars” release on Disney+ this week.
