49ers cancel mandatory minicamp

When the 49ers canceled their OTA practice Monday, it felt as if Thursday’s practice wouldn’t happen, either. But then, a few teams around the NFL decided not to hold mandatory minicamp that’s scheduled for next week.
New Texans’ head coach David Culley said, “our attendance at OTAs has been great for us here. We’ve accomplished what we wanted to accomplish.” When I saw that, instantly, “oh, the 49ers are probably doing the same.”
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon and canceled mandatory minicamp after losing three players for all or half of the 2021 season. Shanahan cited how injuries played a factor but also said the team got in some good work in the seven practices:

NYASK: I m going to say Trey Sermon. I would say Ambry Thomas, but it s just a known fact that rookie corners in the NFL just don t do great. Let at Jeff Okudah last year. He did not play great at all. So I m going to say Sermon because Jeff Wilson Jr. is out, he s going to learn from Raheem Mostert. So Sermon should get 10 carries per game. If Mostert gets injured, Sermon will get 15 carries per game.

The NFL s offseason program may have just started with the onset of organized team activities, but a handful of position battles are already under the microscope.
Everything starts at quarterback where a few jobs are available for the taking. While these competitions will draw the most attention, other teams around the league will find elements critical to their potential success or failure this fall based on what they did or didn t do this offseason.
OTAs are merely the first step of the process. As the weeks pass, individuals will assert themselves through minicamps and training camp.
