This past week, there have been lots of thoughts shared on how the 49ers quarterback situation should play out after the selection of Trey Lance. While that has been the primary focus for many, the position that might deserve the most attention is running back.
San Francisco is bringing back the hero of the 2019 NFC Championship game, Raheem Mostert, along with Jeff Wilson Jr. And a week before the draft, they added Wayne Gallman as a free agent signing. The 49ers didn’t stop there, adding two more backs to their stable by selecting Trey Sermon in the third round and Elijah Mitchell in the sixth round of the draft.

Fantasy fans all know the names of the top rookies selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, including Trevor Lawrence, Najee Harris, Ja Marr Chase, and Kyle Pitts (to name a few), but what about the lesser-known players? Many of them might not impact the stat sheets as rookies, but there are many players out there who could push for bigger roles in their second NFL seasons and beyond. That s big for fantasy managers in dynasty leagues looking for that next hidden gem in their upcoming rookie-only drafts.

The 49ers might have a running back controversy on their hands.
Much to the surprise of many, the 49ers drafted two running backs. They selected Ohio State s Trey Sermon in the third round and Louisiana s Elijah Mitchell in the sixth round. That makes SIX running backs currently on the roster. Either the 49ers are looking to throw back their offense to the 60s and 70s, or a couple of these players are going to be shown the door.

The San Francisco 49ers 2020 NFL season was arguably the most disappointing season over the last decade purely due to the high expectations the team had set for itself by making the Super Bowl the season prior. The underwhelming season was primarily plagued with injuries in addition to holes on the roster that were neglected in the 2020 offseason.
However, the Niners started the 2021 offseason with an underrated free agency period during which they were able to retain most of their free agents, including Trent Williams, Jason Verrett, Kyle Juscyk, Jaquiski Tartt, and more while bringing in key role players in Alex Mack and Samson Ebukam. Even after this successful signing period, the 49ers needed more depth and starters at specific holes at quarterback, offensive line, cornerback, and safety, all of which they attempted to address during the Draft.

The 2021 NFL Draft is in the books. The San Francisco 49ers made a total of eight selections and used five of them on offensive players.
Of course, the most significant pick for the Niners came at No. 3 overall when they took North Dakota State QB, Trey Lance. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan made their move up the draft board by sending the No. 12 pick this year, first-round picks in 2022 and 2023, plus a 2022 third-rounder to the Miami Dolphins to move up nine spots.
Everyone knew they made the move to get their QB of the future, but the question in the month leading up to the draft was which one it would be. The first two picks were seemingly set in stone, and they went as expected.
