One school district wooed parents and students back with pandemic safety demos
Five days a week, Charlene Brown sends her 11-year-old daughter Nevaeh Bailey to a brick-and-mortar school to learn, in person, in the classroom.
As well as being reassured that Nevaeh is getting educated and socializing with her peers, it means that Brown is able to go to work herself.
“I work as a physician office specialist, so I have to work five days a week,” she said.
It’s a slice of “normal life” in the coronavirus pandemic that is still not available for millions of other working parents who have to oversee their children’s virtual learning.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A group of parents and community members demanded an end of a mandatory mask rule in schools.
Holding signs with messages like, “Let them breathe,” “Masks should be a choice!” and “The most important school supply is oxygen,” the group gathered outside the Charleston County School District Headquarters on Calhoun Street.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A new elementary school is coming to Johns Island and the St. Johns Constituent District 9 Board of Trustees has a lot of questions about what the school will look like.
On Tuesday, officials with the Charleston County School District answered the District 9 board’s questions and concerns during a meeting.
Many of the questions centered around the school’s potential location and how far students may have to travel to get to the school.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Charleston County, school district leaders are finalizing plans for vaccinating staff.
Superintendent Dr. Geritta Postlewait updated school board members about protocols and school operations, during a committee of the whole meeting on Monday.
District officials will be partnering up with the Medical University of South Carolina to roll out vaccines to teachers and staff, once they become available.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Winter competitions are being put on hold in the Charleston County School District. This comes after district officials say nearly 200 games across the state had to be canceled because of the coronavirus last week.
Nearly a third of the 60 basketball and wrestling teams in the Charleston County School District have had to quarantine since mid-November. Jeff Borowy, chief operating officer for CCSD, says there are still 10 teams in quarantine as of Thursday.
