Just another vacation tale
Jeff Gilliland Staff columnist
Last year it was hornets and bears. In the past it has been really sick kids, keys locked in the car, or prescription glasses lost in the ocean only to appear after hours of looking for them on the face of an ornery son. It doesn’t always happen, but it seems that each year my wife and I take our family on vacation, as often as not we find some misadventure.
This year was no different.
There were 12 of us total ranging in age from 60 to 7 months, but in the vehicle my wife and I were in, there were four. We had been on the road for 13-plus hours, and were about 20 minutes from our destination of Tybee Island, Georgia. We were leisurely passing through downtown Savannah, Georgia when the chaos broke loose.

For several years the Sugar Tree Ridge Church of Christ has quietly held summer events for local kids like a Vacation Bible School featuring NFL and NBA players, including one year when 22 kids were baptized, according to church minister Rob Rhodes.
But this year the church decided to go bigger, and with help from several other area churches, has planned the End of Summer Back to School BBQ for 4-8 p.m. (or longer if people linger) Sunday, Aug. 15 at Bright Elementary School.
HCSO: Tree accident kills man
By Jeff Gilliland - jgilliland@timesgazette.com
A Greenfield man was killed Tuesday in an apparent tree-cutting accident, according to Highland County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brandon Stratton.
Stratton said the sheriff’s office received a call reporting the accident at 14480 U.S. Route 50, east of Hillsboro across from Cole’s Bait & Tackle, at 8:25 p.m.
Bryan Stapleton, 46, of Greenfield, was found unresponsive and pinned beneath a large tree, according to Stratton.
The chief deputy said Stapleton was apparently working by himself.
Stapleton was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Highland County Coroner’s Office, Stratton said.
