A suspected drunken driver going the wrong way on Interstate 8 early Monday crashed into the guardrail of a highway overpass, causing significant damage to the guardrail and dropping debris on a vehicle passing below, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The 26-year-old driver was headed east in the westbound lanes of the freeway in a 2009 Honda Civic when he slammed into the guardrail around 2 a.m., CHP Officer Jeff Christy said.
The car came to a stop with the front half dangling over the street below Second Street near Naranca Avenue, Christy said.
Debris from the damaged guardrail fell onto a passing vehicle, a 2014 Cadillac CTS. The 53-year-old driver was uninjured, but the falling debris damaged the roof of her car, Christy said.
