The Birmingham Times 1871  –City of Birmingham founded; now the state’s most populous city, Birmingham was founded at the crossing of two rail lines near one of the world’s richest deposits of minerals. 1873 Birmingham becomes seat of Jefferson County. –First Colored Baptist Church founded. Birmingham particularly hard hit by cholera due to the lack of urban infrastructure and the poor housing conditions. At least 128 people died from cholera, which struck in the height of summer and persisted for several weeks. JefCoEd offering mental health resources to students

From The Tribune staff reports JEFFERSON COUNTY – The Jefferson County School District is taking an aggressive approach to helping students deal with mental health issues. “Making sure our students have access to adequate mental health services is something that is a priority for our district,” said Scott Mohon, Director of Assessment, Accountability, and Student Support. “In order for our students to be successful in the classroom, we have to make sure their social and emotional needs are being met. There is no way around this issue other than to address it head-on.” Within the last year, the district has hired mental health director Dr. Jeffrey Moore to coordinate and expand mental health services. This position was created to ensure that all students in the Jefferson County School System are provided with the social and emotional support necessary for them to be academically successful.

One injured after speeding truck crashes into parked car inside of Dandridge school zone The Dandridge Police Department said a 45-year-old man hit a parked, school-owned vehicle diverting traffic during morning bus duty. He was going 40 miles per hour. Author: Katie Inman Updated: 10:45 PM EST January 19, 2021 A Jefferson County man was injured after rear-ending a parked car in a Dandridge school zone Tuesday morning.  Police say 45-year-old Charles Clayton Justice was going 15 miles above the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour, just before 8 a.m. It happened on Highway 92 right in front of Dandridge Elementary School. A Dodge Charger, owned by the Jefferson County School System, was sitting in the fast lane with traffic cones in front of and behind the vehicle. The blue lights were flashing, to direct traffic and lead cars into the slow lane.
