From staff reports Contributed GETTING AN EARLY START — Alex McAfee, a senior in the criminal justice program at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School, takes latent fingerprints as part of her forensics studies. McAfee plans to study criminal behavior upon graduation and said her work at the JVS is preparing her for the future. There are a variety of job opportunities in that field from corrections to forensics and security. BLOOMINGDALE The Jefferson County Joint Vocational School is helping students forge a path for their future, and the criminal justice program offers a wide range of career opportunities in that field.

Edison Local purchasing land for vehicles | News, Sports, Jobs

Richardson HAMMONDSVILLE – Edison Local school board members reorganized for the year and took action on a land purchase to store vehicles during a session on Jan. 6. Aaron Richardson, board president, and Ron Smyth, vice president, were returned to their posts with Lisa Bruzzese remaining as treasurer during the organizational session while officials discussed ongoing projects at Edison High School at a subsequent regular meeting. Superintendent Bill Beattie said the district was paying $150,000 for a nearly 3-acre tract a quarter mile from the Richmond campus to accommodate about 20 district buses and vans. He explained that the relocation was necessary in order to use the current bus garage site for the new softball field.

From staff reports BLOOMINGDALE Students at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School will compete later this month in a variety of skillsets, but this year’s contest will have some changes due to COVID-19. The annual Spotlight on Skills competition is set for Jan. 27-28 and students in academic and lab programs will participate in a series of events throughout the day. Each school program has a student organization and pupils will compete to earn spots in regional competitions. SkillsUSA includes about 80 percent of the students while other groups include the Health Occupations Students of America, Future Career and Community Leaders of America, Business Professionals of America and the Future Farmers of America. The technical trade skills portion centers on more hands-on knowledge while the leadership segment views softer skills from CPR/first aid to job interviews.

Jefferson County JVS hopes to see jump in adult education enrollment | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff writer BLOOMINGDALE As has been the case for just about everything during the ongoing pandemic, the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School’s adult education programs have had to adapt. Rich Wilinski, the program coordinator, is hoping safety measures and new classes are going to bring people back into the programs this upcoming term. While Wilinski understands the concerns about COVID-19, he wants anyone on the fence to know that safety precautions are in place throughout the JVS, including the adult programs, and he feels the staff has done an admirable job of making it a safe environment. “We certainly understand people are concerned about COVID, we understand people might feel uncomfortable,” he said. “The joint vocational school has done a great job of trying to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Board views updates at Hills Elementary | News, Sports, Jobs

From staff reports ON TOUR — Members of the Indian Creek Board of Education took a tour of construction at Hills Elementary School in Mingo Junction. Contributed MINGO JUNCTION Indian Creek school board members got a glimpse of ongoing updates to Hills Elementary School following the regular meeting on Thursday. Assistant Superintendent John Belt guided the tour and noted progress was being made in the $10 million renovation project included in the district’s main construction plan. In addition to Hills’ upgrades, two new buildings are going up to replace Indian Creek High School and Wintersville Elementary as part of the overall $63 million project, and the sites should be ready for the 2021-22 school year with the older school buildings to be demolished that spring.
