So much Christmas music has been written by Jews that each year on the Jewish Music Hour on KNON, I host “The Totally Inappropriate Jewish Music Hour Christmas Music by Jews.” But who are some of these songwriters?
Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” is the most-recorded Christmas song ever. Berlin was born in Siberia in 1888 and emigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island when he was five. Although he had few memories of Russia, he always had a love and appreciation for his adopted land, which led him to write “God Bless America.” But not only did the Jewish Berlin write the most-recorded Christmas song, he also wrote “Easter Parade,” the most-recorded Easter song.
Sugar. Styne and Cahn wrote âLet It Snow!â as a standalone song in 1945, and it was premiered later that year by Vaughn Monroe. It doesnât mention any holiday, but its winter setting has made it a frequent favorite for holiday albums. Itâs been covered by a host of artists, including Dean Martin, Doris Day, Bing Crosby, and Carly Simon.

Call Me Madam, but heâs also responsible for countless standalone melodies in the Great American Songbook. Many theatre fans might associate âWhite Christmasâ with the film and stage musical that share its name, but it actually originated in 1941 as a single performed by Bing Crosby, the recording of which holds the Guinness World Record for best-selling single of all time. For Jews in old Europe, the Christmas season was a time to be watchful and wary and to keep out of sight. For their descendants in America, the Christmas season which is also the season of Chanukah, of course is a time to celebrate and give thanks for the freedom of religion that protects the menorah in their living room window no less than the Christmas tree in their neighbor’s.
In medieval and early modern Europe, this time of year often brought sermons filled with invective against Jews for the supposed crime of crucifying Christ. Instead of “good tidings of great joy,” there were apt to be blood libels and pogroms. In some Polish and German communities, Jews referred to Christmas Eve as Vay Nacht (Woe Night), a bitter play on Weihnahchten , the German word for Christmas.
