Idaho House Rejects K-12 Teacher Raises Over Social Justice Concerns

1:23 Republicans last week killed the budget for Idaho’s public colleges and universities, which they accused of indoctrinating kids by teaching social justice concepts and critical race theory. Critical race theory elevates race when considering implications for educational and societal inequity. On Tuesday, it was more of the same – this time for a $1.1 billion bill paying K-12 teacher salaries. Rep. Heather Scott (R-Blanchard) said she supports educators, “But we need to protect our teachers from being forced to teach this garbage of social justice, including critical race theory.” Specifically, Scott and others want to forbid any social justice or critical race theory lessons in the classroom by tacking on specific legislative intent language in the bill. They also want to block any of the $9 million intended for professional development from going towards teachers learning how to teach about social justice.

Features: Idaho House defeats bill outlawing protests at private homes (3/11/21)

Thursday, March 11, 2021 AP - AP Wire Service BOISE, Idaho (AP) Legislation to make it illegal to demonstrate at private residences in Idaho was defeated Tuesday in the state House. The House voted 38-31 to reject the measure that backers said was needed to prevent mobs from intimidating and terrorizing families in their homes. They said demonstrators used the tactic to instill fear and sway officials. Idaho in the last year has experienced high-profile demonstrations at various officials homes spurred by frustration with restrictions on gatherings or mask-wearing mandates related to the pandemic. Backers also said allowing the demonstrations would deter people from public service or joining police agencies, as at least one officer s home was targeted. The measure was supported by law enforcement agencies.

Talk about gaslighting. How else would you describe Republican legislators who transformed the Gem State into a child care desert before turning on working families and their kids? Before killing a $6 million federal grant to promote quality early childhood learning by a 36-to-34 vote, they managed to drown one of the partners involved - the Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children - in a wave of innuendo. But what else could these culture warriors do? Rep. Priscilla Giddings, R-White Bird, couldn’t defend Idaho’s sorry record as one of six states that doesn’t lift a finger to help young children secure quality care. Not only has it refused to spend its own resources, but the state has frequently slapped away offers of assistance from the federal government. Even Idaho’s perennial counterparts in the national bottom of the basement - notably Mississippi and Alabama - are doing much more.

Love in the pandemic: Summer wedding uncertainty continues for 2021

CALGARY Angad Suri and his fiancé Simran Kalkat were supposed to get married in August 2020. Thanks to the pandemic, their big day has been moved to June 2021. The original guest list was around 450 people. It’s now down to 200. “We have people coming up to us and asking when’s the wedding? We give them the date but in the back of my mind it’s always that I honestly don’t even know if I would be able to invite you just because I don’t know how many people by June are going to be allowed to attend the wedding at that point,” said Suri.
