High school students prepare for full-time, in-person return in Newton

Julie M. Cohen/Wicked Local and Michael P. Norton/State House News Service With the announcement that all districts must provide high school students with full-time, in-person learning by May 17, Newton officials are formulating a plan to meet that requirement. “Given the DESE [Department of Elementary and Secondary Education] announcement, we will now need to adapt the [remote] Wednesday schedule to meet state requirements,” said Julie McDonough, school communications director. “We had anticipated this announcement and had already begun the planning process.” “There was more than two months notice to prepare for this,” said Newton resident Matt Hills, a DESE board member. “I am sure that NPS had very good reasons for starting four days having already been told two months ago by DESE that five days a week would be required.”

COVID tests required for some Newton high school students

Wicked Local With participation in voluntary COVID testing among high school students remaining very low, Superintendent David Fleishman recently said testing now will be required in order to participate in all extracurricular activities. Testing statistics remained the same for North and South combined when comparing the weeks of March 22 and April 12, according to the schools. During both weeks, 2,546 students total were eligible to take the test, but only 762 did. Therefore, only 30% of the 2,546 eligible students volunteered to be tested. “In general, this type of surveillance/screened testing using the pooled methodology is most useful if 70-80% of students are participating,” said communication director Julie McDonough previously.
