(ABC 6 News) - Governor Tim Walz today announced the end of Minnesota’s statewide mask requirement, aligning Minnesota with new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on face coverings. Minnesotans who are not fully vaccinated are strongly recommended to wear face coverings indoors.
Private businesses and local municipalities may still put in place face covering requirements. And Minnesota’s Safe Learning Plan, along with the existing face covering guidance for schools and child care settings, remain in effect.
“This great day is possible because vaccines have proven to be effective,” said Governor Walz. “Once you are fully vaccinated you are protected. You can confidently return to the people you love and things that you miss – all without a mask. The message is clear get vaccinated and let’s put the pandemic behind us once and for all.”

Friday, Gov. Tim Walz removed the state s mask mandate. However, some places are choosing to keep the requirement.
The decision was approved during a State Executive Council meeting. In addition to approving the removal of the mask mandate, the council also approved the governor s request for a 30-day extension of his emergency powers.
The council discussed wanting to balance protecting public health with adapting to changes during the pandemic. We don t want a situation where a mask mandate would cause more confusion than compliance which would not lead to better health outcomes, Minnesota State Auditor Julie Blaha said. It s also a good time for us to remember that now that we see the tool that a mask can be . I hope we do see some long term changes with that, I mean, if you re going into a hospital as a visitor, why not wear a mask?

ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - Minnesota s mask mandate ended suddenly Friday when the Minnesota Executive Council unanimously approved Gov. Tim Walz s order rescinding the requirement.
The council, comprised of Walz and the four other statewide officials, voted 5-0. Members raised concerns about the timing but said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention left them with little choice. Thursday, the CDC said fully vaccinated people could go without masks in most indoor settings.
