Fireworks will again explode in brilliant colors over the Connecticut River in Springfield this Fourth of July.
In another step toward a post-pandemic return to normalcy, Independence Day will be celebrated with music, food, fireworks – and an anticipated large crowd – at an event called “Star Spangled Springfield.”
Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt likened the decision to hold the holiday celebration to 10 years ago when the show went on just a month after a tornado tore through a third of the city upsetting, lives and livelihoods.
Now we can say no pandemic is stronger than our community, Matt said.
Matt, along with Mayor Domenic Sarno, other city officials, and event sponsors announced plans for the festivities at Riverfront Park Wednesday.
Springfield postpones July 4 fireworks; no date given
Updated Apr 30, 2021;
SPRINGFIELD Spirit of Springfield will not host Independence Day festivities on July 4, 2021 saying the state’s reopening plan won’t be far enough along by then by then for a full reopening.
But Spirit of Springfield hasn’t given up hope for setting off fireworks later in 2021, though no date was given
“Although fairs and festivals can have 50% capacity, the Spirit of Springfield is not able to control the number of people gathering for July 4th festivities since they are free and open to the public,” stated Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt. “We are optimistic that there will fireworks in Springfield before the end of 2021.”

This is the second year the event could not be held in mid May due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The health and safety of our community is of the utmost importance,” said Judy Matt, president of Spirit of Springfield. “We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the community together in celebration at a date later in the year.”
