BOX ELDER, S.D. We grow up learning a simple please and thank you can go a long way, and a local school was recognized for doing just that.
Thankful Thursdays have been a staple in a few classes for several years now at Francis Case Elementary in Box Elder. Aiming to teach the value of gratitude, 3rd and 2nd grade teachers, Kerry Waterson and Judy Badura, implemented a day for students to write thank you notes to people they were grateful for.
“An understanding of how their words make other people feel, in a positive way,” said Waterson. “A simple thing as a thank you note brings a lot of joy to other people, and so, then they in return start feeling that joy, and I think it just spreads that kindness around.”

Francis Case Elementary School in Box Elder got the TODAY Show treatment Tuesday morning after a feature on their âThankful Thursdayâ tradition received national attention.
Each Thursday, students in Judy Baduraâs, Stacey Schmidtâs and Kerry Watersonâs classes write thank-you cards to someone theyâre thankful for.
âThankful Thursday is about not just thanking someone because they give you something like a gift, but for helping you in parts of your life,â second-grade student Jadon Johnson said. âItâs able to give your love because you donât have to think with your head when youâre writing, youâve got to think with your heart.â
