A view of Premier Village Phu Quoc Resort On the world map Just 10 to 15 years ago, Viet Nam had a very limited number of luxury resorts, limited infrastructure and no world-class theme parks. But that’s no longer the case. In fact, the country now possesses some of the world’s leading luxury accommodations and theme parks.   At the World Travel Awards (WTA), often described as ‘the Oscars of the world travel industry’, Hotel de la Coupole - MGallery (Sa Pa) was named ‘Asia’s Leading Design Hotel’ and ‘Vietnam’s Leading Luxury Hotel’ in 2019 and 2020. Meanwhile, Sun World Fansipan Legend, also located in Sapa, was named the ‘World’s Leading Cultural Tourist Attraction’ award in the same years.

Vietnam makes its name well-known in world tourism map 16:33 | 14/05/2021 Mai Chau - a tourist destination in Hoa Binh province (Photo: VNA) Hanoi - With a series of impressive milestones and symbols, Vietnam has quickly become an attractive destination for international tourists in recent years. Due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country welcomed only more than 2 million foreign tourists in 2020. However, in the 2015-2019 period, the number of foreign tourist arrivals to the country rose by 2.3 times, from 7.9 million to around 18.5 million, or an average annual growth rate of 22 percent. Vietnam ranked 63rd among 140 countries and territories in the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index 2019, jumping up 12 places from 2015.

Forget Phuket, here’s Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s big tourism hope Snorkelling in Phu Quoc island, Vietnam. On a late afternoon in Phu Quoc, Vietnam s largest island, couples and families relax on beanbag chairs at a Middle Eastern-themed beach bar, clinking their glasses while watching the sun set on the horizon. A few metres away, children build sandcastles, jump into the waves and indulge in water fights. A scene like this in April seems far-fetched amid a raging Covid-19 pandemic that has seen spikes in new cases and fresh lockdowns in Asia and Europe. But this is a reality in Vietnam, where life is almost back to normal thanks to many containment strategies including border closures that have kept out almost everyone since March last year, except for repatriated citizens, foreign investors and businesspeople. The country has recorded some 2,800 infections and 35 coronavirus-related deaths so far, despite sharing a border with China, where Covid-19 was first reported.
