International Workers Day, May 1, is celebrated by tens of millions of people around the world. Its radical history emerged from the Haymarket Square resistance and the massacre that followed in 1886.
May Day was revived as a workers’ day by the immigrant rights movement in the United States in 2009. As the labor movement continues to blossom in the U.S., more and more people here now recognize International Workers Day, or “May Day.” Thousands of workers joined May Day events around the country this year despite the limitations presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Milwaukee Alliance Organizes to Rename Lindbergh Park

Lindbergh Park in Milwaukee sits a few blocks from the zooming cars on Atkinson Avenue, behind the old Keefe Avenue School. It is surrounded by houses that face the park, and many people see it as a symbol of nostalgia as well as their home.
An effort is underway to rename the park, named after American aviator Charles Lindbergh. The Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, a grassroots community organization in Milwaukee since 1973, is spearheading this effort. They are circulating a petition to rename the park after civil rights organizer and Milwaukee freedom fighter Lucille Berrien.

Milwaukee Autonomous Tenants Union organized a picket of S2 properties, the third biggest owner of real estate in the city. There is a much bigger emergency, a public health crisis if you will, taking place in our communities. Families are being evicted at an alarming rate, all during a pandemic and an economic crisis. MATU was joined by various activist groups from around the city, including the Party for socialism and liberation (PSL), The People’s revolution (TPR), Democratic socialists of America (DSA) and the Milwaukee chapter of the Brown Berets.

While some who spoke to FOX6 News expressed optimism, others are skeptical of which campaign promises the administration will keep.
A Wednesday demonstration on Milwaukee s south side called for an end to family separation at the U.S.-Mexico border. We really believe that apart from everything political parties tend to promise things that placate the Latino community…they need to be held accountable, said Juan Miguel Martinez with Milwaukee s Brown Berets.
