Irrigators call for urgent action over nitrate levels in Waimea groundwater

Braden Fastier/Stuff Grape grower Brian Halstead says members of the Waimea Irrigators and Water Users incorporated society believe the council should not “continue to drag its feet” over the issue of nitrates in the groundwater. Tests of some bores in 2019, arranged by Waimea Plains landowner Cathy Hughson and fellow Tasman District resident Lew Solomon, also showed some nitrate levels exceeded the drinking water standards. The Richmond urban water supply is drawn from aquifers under the plains. In the 2019 tests arranged by Hughson and Solomon, that water supply had a nitrate reading of about 5.1mg/L nitrate-nitrogen, well below the drinking water standards of 11.3.

Growing concern over nitrate levels in Selwyn leads to testing

High nitrate levels have been found in previous testing around Dunsandel, sparking fears about how safe private residents’ water really was. Last year, Selwyn landowner Mike Glover held a testing session at the Springston Hall for concerned residents and was surprised to see 100 people turn up. Using a professional nitrate tester, he tested 80 samples and delivered some shocking results, including a 11.5mg per litre reading near Dunsandel. Stuff has also been told of one resident, who did not want to be named, recording 14mg per litre. The Selwyn district has specifically been under the microscope because of high nitrate levels that regional council Environment Canterbury (ECan) blamed on farming intensification.
