COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) â Maryland womenâs basketball coach Brenda Frese agreed to a contract extension that could keep her at the school through 2027-28.
Freseâs contract now runs at least through the 2026-27 season. If she is still with the Terrapins in May 2023, an additional year would be added to the agreement.
Frese led Maryland to the 2006 NCAA championship and has been to the tournament in 17 of her 19 years as its coach.
Maryland lost five starters from last yearâs Big Ten championship team, but still went 26-3 and won the conference for the sixth time in its seven years in the league in 2021. The Terrapins reached the Sweet 16 at the NCAAs.
Nineteen years after first stepping foot on campus as a fast-rising coach, Frese has won 500 games with the Terrapins, brought home a national title and won another AP National Coach of the Year honor in 2021.
Her first award helped bring her to College Park. The second helped keep Frese there for the long haul.
“I’m really proud of the … consistency that this program has been able to uphold,” Frese said. “I consider myself a consistent personality and person, and it means a lot to continue to hold this program at a really high level, because that’s where Maryland belongs.”
Budget talks are underway as lawmakers and Gov. Ned Lamont attempt to reach a deal before the General Assembly adjourns June 9, but the sides remain in disagreement about taxes. Democratic lawmakers favor raising taxes on the wealthy to fund tax credits for the poor and middle-class and other initiatives. Lamont has resisted tax hikes, saying the state is in good financial standing and tax increases send the wrong message.
