FAIRFIELD, CT Fairfield officials continued the debate over the town s 2021-22 budget this week, issuing dueling public statements after the $332.3 million spending plan was approved Monday by the Representative Town Meeting.
The budget passed with a 23-17 vote that fell mostly along party lines. The spending plan has a projected mill rate increase of 0.78 percent, which is set to be finalized 7:30 p.m. Thursday by the Board of Finance. The original version of the budget, presented several months ago by First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick, had an estimated mill rate hike of nearly 2 percent, but the plan saw over $3 million in cuts during the approval process.

FAIRFIELD, CT The four cherry trees that once stood in the center of town have been gone for weeks, but the debate over their removal shows no sign of stopping.
Attorneys met Tuesday with Judge Barry Stevens to discuss a legal complaint challenging the town s decision to allow the Kwanzan cherry trees to be removed and requesting an injunction to save them. Now that the trees are down, plaintiffs James Hughes and Alyssa Israel intend to pursue sanctions, fines and monetary damages. The town has filed a motion to dismiss the complaint.

FAIRFIELD A Democrat on the Representative Town Meeting has switched her party affiliation to Republican after she shared controversial posts about last week’s events at the Capitol on Facebook.
Tameisha Powell-Dunmore, RTM-6, said she changed her party affiliation to Republican on Monday after she claims she was “berated by some Democrats” for posts she made on Facebook and for supporting the first selectwoman’s Voluntary Early Retirement Incentive Program.

FAIRFIELD, CT After a lengthy debate Monday, the Representative Town Meeting voted by a razor-thin margin to approve a $6 million early retirement plan for town workers.
The body signed off, with 21 in favor and 19 opposed, to fund agreements for the voluntary incentive plan with unions representing the town s public service, and professional and technical employees. This is a crucial part to my reorganization plan, First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick told the town meeting when its joint committee met Dec. 7.
